The National Hockey League (NHL) is a qualified ice
hockey league in North America, presently consisting 31 teams. The
NHL is considered to be the premier professional ice hockey league in
the world, and one of the major professional sports leagues in the
United States and Canada. The Stanley Cup, one of the oldest
professional sports trophy in North America, is awarded yearly to the
league playoff champion at the finale of each season. The NHL attracts
several highly experienced players from all over the world and
presently has players from around 20 countries. Canadians have
generally constituted the majority of the players in the sport, with a
growing percentage of American and European players in latest seasons.
