Showcase of Brazilian Cinema

Join us at the Harris Theater as we celebrate the rich cinematic culture & history of Brazil during this three-day celebration featuring five incredible films. Starting on April 11 under the theme "Based on (Almost) True Stories," you can watch the following movies:

April 11, Friday

7 pm: Pictures of Ghosts (Retratos Fantasmas), by Kleber Mendonca
Pictures of Ghosts is a documentary film by Kleber Mendonça Filho that explores the city of Recife, Brazil through the lens of cinema. It was Brazil's official entry for Best International Feature Film at the 2024 Academy Awards. 

April 12th, Saturday

5 pm - Elis & Tom, by Oliveira and Azulay
Through rare and never before seen images, "Elis & Tom: It Had to Be You" is the musical documentary that tells the story of how the encounter and recording of these two giant Artists happened.

7:30 pm - Black God, White Devil (Deus e o Diabo na Terra do Sol) by Glauber Rocha
Myth, mysticism, and revolution collide in a blistering existential western from Glauber Rocha, a pioneer of Brazil's socially committed Cinema Novo movement.

April 13, Sunday

5 pm - Executive Order (Medida Provisoria), by Lazaro Ramos
Set in a dystopian near future in Rio de Janeiro, a lawyer (Alfred Enoch) sues the Brazilian government for reparation of all descendants of African slaves in the country. 

7:30 pm - No More History Without Us (Nao Havera Mais Historia Sem Nos), by Priscilla Brasil (followed by a special Q&A with the director)
In a world oversaturated with greenwashing, a filmmaker from the Amazon region picks up her camera to tell the rainforest's true story.
