Civil discourse is indispensable to the democratic project, and
without it, the very foundation of a democratic society can be
threatened. Yet civil discourse in America has become a rare
commodity, as both Republicans and Democrats increasingly engage in
polarizing rhetoric, driving the country further and further apart and
fosters a climate of democratic disillusionment.
In light of the upcoming 2020 Presidential Election, which many
predict will be highly contentious, the need for bipartisan efforts
and civil discourse seems to be more pressing than ever. What needs to
be done in order to stimulate such efforts and how can we re-engage
American citizens in practicing civil discourse to strengthen American
democracy, and unify our country?
A long-time supporter of bipartisan efforts, former Senator Jeff Flake
will offer his vision for the future of American democracy and share
his ideas about how to reach across the political aisle.
