Paula Krentzel, Ph.D., will teach us about the Distancing Technique and Future Rehearsal for the treatment of OCD and related anxiety disorders. You will learn how to help your clients become detached observers to their thoughts, sensations, images, and urges using EMDR therapy

Time Line: TBD

Learning Objectives:

1. Describe the Distancing Technique and identify when to use it.

2. List the procedural steps of the Distancing Technique as used within the Preparation Phase of the EMDR Standard Protocol.

3. Identify different types of adaptive coping statements (installed during the Preparation Phase) that can be used as interweaves during the Desensitization Phase (Phase ) of the EMDR Standard Protocol.

4. Lead the client in Future Rehearsal with a focus on integrating the use of adaptive coping statements in challenging situations.

5. Determine when to process past traumas and/or triggers for OCD and panic using the Standard EMDR Protocol (either before or after the use of the Distancing Technique).

Paula has been a practicing psychologist for three decades. She was trained at Massachusetts General Hospital and Children’s Hospital, Boston, and studied at the Center for Mindfulness at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center with Jon Kabot-Zinn.

Her private practice focuses on the integration of cognitive – behavioral therapy, Family therapy, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) with relaxation and meditation.

Paula’s areas of expertise are trauma, specifically PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), complex trauma, dissociative disorders, anxiety disorders (specifically, Obsessive–Compulsive Disorders (OCD), attachment disorders, chronic medical disorders, and depression.

The registration fee is $115

Early bird rate of $90 (until October 25)

Cancellation policy: The registration fee can be refunded in full, less a $25 fee, up to seven days before the event. That is, the last day for refunds is Friday, November 1st. Refund requests must be made in writing to ri.emdria@gmail.com. No refunds will be issued after November 1st.

6.0 EMDRIA Credits have been approved for this training

This program is open to clinicians who have completed the full EMDR basic training and have experience in using EMDR with this client population before using this material. Eligibility for EMDRIA Credits is restricted to those who have completed an EMDRIA-Approved Basic EMDR Training. Attendees who are partially trained in EMDR are not eligible to receive EMDRIA Credits. Attendance at the entire workshop is required to receive credit. 6.0 Professional Credits have been applied for with NASW, pending approval.

The RI EMDRIA Regional Network maintains responsibility for this program and its content in accordance with EMDRIA standards. Lunch options: You may bring your own lunch if you wish, or you may pre-order a sandwich and beverage for $15.00. Save the Bay (www.savebay.org) is located at the head of

Narragansett Bay, with a lovely view of the water and a short walking path you can enjoy during breaks and lunchtime, weather permitting. There will not be adequate time to go out for a restaurant lunch.

Directions to Save the Bay: Some GPS program directions may lead you to a locked gate. Please access Save the Bay through the front entrance for Johnson and Wales University, Harborside Campus, at the intersection of Narragansett Boulevard and Harborside Boulevard, in Providence. Follow Harborside Blvd to the end and turn right to find Save the Bay.
