always a trip when the “post-modern kings of western swing” roll
into town. However, this year, when the 9-time GRAMMY-winning
ensemble, Asleep at the Wheel, shows up they’ll be sharing a trip
down memory lane. Asleep at the Wheel On Stage and On Screen kicks off
with a short documentary, giving longtime and new fans a thrilling
ride through the 4-decade history of the band. Video of rare
performances, appearances, photos and more all tell the story of how
this musical group took off, encountered a few bumps in the road but,
is still rolling. The 6’7” Ray Benson, a man is who is larger than
life is captured on the big screen. The driving force behind The Wheel
takes viewers from the 1970 formation in Paw Paw, West Virginia to the
first gigs and big breaks in San Francisco, permanent settling in
Austin Texas, and then on to each of the improbable come-backs that
have breathed new life into the band with each succeeding generation.
The Wheel’s story includes interviews with original members Lucky
Oceans, Floyd Domino, Leroy Preston, Chris O’Connell, and Gene
Dobkin, Friends and collaborators Dolly Parton, Vince Gil, Merle
Hagerd, Willie Nelson, Huey Lewis and more recall their experiences
andpersonal stories with the band that, until now, have never been
shared. After the film, Ray and Asleep at the Wheel do what they do
best – taking the stage to perform a full concert of fan favorites
and current music, and in the process celebrate both the historic
achievements and the continued vitality. Event Pricing Cabaret
