Feminist or not? Our fore-sisters before us paved the way, yet, for
some, Feminism, became a DIRTY WORD. Some women still shy away from
the bra-burning antics that our sisters before us so bravely fought
for.
Whether you proudly own your Feminist roots and or run for the hills,
women are being called to rise together and continue to fight for
equality of pay, more seats in Parliament, advance the Gender Gap in
C-Suite roles and LEAD like never before.
However...Feminism isn’t all for one and one for all. We need to
take a close look at Intersectional Feminism! The Women’s Movement
originally largely excluded Women of Color. Today we get to join the
conversation and move towards awareness and healing so there is
equality for all women.
As it stands, black women earn $0.61 for every dollar earned by their
white male counterparts. Native American women earn $0.58 to every
dollar, and Latina women earn $0.53. Meanwhile, white women and Asian
women earn $0.77 and $0.85, respectively. (Ref: here
[https://www.cnbc.com/2018/04/10/today-isnt-equal-pay-day-for-black-latina-or-native-american-women.html]).
For women to truly rise, we MUST do it together. So how do we uplift
each other, HEAL the wounds of the past and truly see each other?
“Intersectional Feminism means that we live in the MESSY and complex
intersection of not only our gender but our race, ethnicity, ability,
disability, immigration status. Feminism is much more than gender
there are layers of oppression and how do we really be inclusive so we
can really move forward.” Apana Ray

WHAT IS THE UNCOMFORTABLE CONVERSATION SERIES?
The Uncomfortable Conversation Series’ mission is to bring topics to
the Austin community (and beyond) that can open up a dialogue for
greater understanding and deeper connection about topics that many
women are challenged with finding answers or often feel uncomfortable
speaking about. We bring awareness to difficult and often complex
conversations that can be hard to navigate without the support of
experts and peers that are dedicated to living in a more accepting and
open-minded world.
With each topic, we bring you experts that will share their insight
and wisdom and create a space for all audience members to participate
in the ‘conversation'.
This unique series will be run monthly until the end of the year and
cover topics such as:
YOU’RE A GOSSIP: How to eliminate a culturally toxic habit from your
life.
LOVING TRUMP: Pro or against? Either way, we’ll discuss what we can
do to take a stand.
WHITE PRIVILEGE: What every white woman should know from a POC lens.
THERE IS NO PRINCE CHARMING: How to find what you’re really looking
for.
This is not an event where experts are speaking at you but, with you.
In this series you engage in the conversation, no matter how
uncomfortable it gets.
“An expanded mind is a compassionate mind.”
BROUGHT TO YOU BY:
The Uncomfortable Conversations Series is hosted by Sister Suppers in
partnership with The Riveter. Sister Suppers is a growing global
movement of women opening up their homes, cooking a home-cooked meal
and facilitating intentional conversation, backed by the power of
Sisterhood.
