10TH ANNUAL DR. TOM MATTHEWS LECTURE _ENHANCING YOUR CLINICAL
EFFICIENCY_
Featuring
DR. RENATO P. MARTINS
Course Objectives:
The course objectives are to simplify biomechanics and show how better
mechanics can be used to enhance clinical efficiency.
The first portion of this course uses scenarios to apply mechanical
concepts to various clinical situations. The scenarios include the
correction of rotations, molar distalization with miniscrews, molar
intrusion and archwire deflections.
The second portion of the course focuses on mechanically based pearls
that could change the way you treat patients. The pearls pertain to
early tranverse and verticle corrections, use of chain and
intermaxillary elastics with light wires, molar uprighting, friction
control, the optimal use of nickel-titanium's mechanical properties,
the logical choice of prescription, and diagnosis based on upper
incisor position.

DR. TOM MATTHEWS helped found the Department of Orthodontics at Baylor
College of Dentistry in 1961 along with his lifelong friend, Dr.
Robert E. Gaylord. Dr. Matthews had a profound influence on all the
graduates of the Department for almost 50 years. The Department of
Orthodontics, and its graduates gratefully recognized Dr. Matthews’
many contributions to orthodontic education by establishing the Dr.
Tom Matthews Lectureship in 2007.
The Dr. Tom Matthews Lectureship will be presented annually in
perpetuity to honor this outstanding gentleman. Funding for this
lectureship is provided by the Dr. Tom Matthews Endowment (held by the
Baylor Oral Health Foundation) and continues to be made possible
through the generosity of his former students, colleagues, friends,
family and the attendees at each annual lecture.
DR. PETER BUSCHANG is a Regents Professor and director of orthodontic
research at Texas A&M University Baylor College of Dentistry. Prior to
college, he volunteered to serve in the US Army from 1969-1972. After
college, Dr. Buschang was a NIDCR postdoctoral fellow in the
Department of Orthodontics University of Connecticut Health Science
Center from 1980-1983, and then a FRSQ scholar in the Orthodontic
section and Human Growth Research Center at the University of Montreal
from 1983-1988. His research interests focus on craniofacial growth,
developmental adaptations to orthodontic and surgical treatments and
oral-motor function. He has published over 300 peer-reviewed articles,
three books and numerous book chapters. Dr. Buschang has given over
150 invited lectures and workshops, and has served as associate editor
for several journals. He is the only person to hold honorary
memberships in both the American Association of Orthodontics and the
Edward H. Angle Society. In 2011, his former residents honored him by
establishing the Peter H. Buschang Endowed Professorship in
Orthodontics.
