Description: The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as
Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the
Direction of the Marquis de Sade, almost invariably shortened to
Marat/Sade, is an unrelenting depiction of human struggle and
suffering which asks whether true revolution comes from changing
society or changing oneself. Blurring the boundary between reality and
delusion, Marat/Sade depicts the events of July 13, 1808, when
Charlotte Corday murdered Jean Paul Marat, an architect of France's
Reign of Terror in the aftermath of the Revolution. The "play" is
directed by the Marquis de Sade and performed by the residents of a
unnamed institution. As the play progresses, the unspoken social
contract between viewer and performer breaks down as the world of the
play devolves into chaos.
