DESCRIPTION/LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Through the use of small group discussion and hands on learning, this
training will provide guidance and tools to perinatal professionals on
how to better serve survivor clients through their pregnancy and
postpartum. It will explore the various types of trauma that can
impact maternal health including; intimate partner violence, sexual
trauma, race-based trauma, birth trauma, and overall enhance your
ability to serve women experiencing current or past abuse.

EXPERIENCING CURRENT OR PAST ABUSE OR TRAUMA
SPEAKER INFO:
Courtney Butts is a Licensed Master Social Worker who works as the
Program Director at a DALLAS, TX non-profit. Courtney is responsible
for the development, planning, and coordination of violence prevention
services. In 2007, she obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology
and a Minor in African American Studies from The University of
Wisconsin at Oshkosh. After moving to DALLAS, Courtney obtained her
MSSW at the University of Texas at Arlington. Courtney has worked to
prevent relationship violence since 2006. Courtney is also a certified
Doula and has coupled her passion for working with survivors of
domestic violence with her love of pregnant women with a mission of
lowering the maternal mortality rate of Black mothers.
Alexis Edwards is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker & Certified Doula
in private practice in Austin, TX. She has a Bachelor of Science in
Child & Family Studies from Louisiana State University and a Master of
Science in Social Work from the University of Texas at Austin. Her own
journey into motherhood inspired her to serve families as they
navigate new parenthood and in 2016 she became certified as a BIRTH
AND POSTPARTUM DOULA. Alexis’ unique expertise allows her to bridge
the gap between BIRTH AND MENTAL HEALTH AND SHE IS PASSIONATE ABOUT
SUPPORTING PARENTS IN THEIR PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL HEALING DURING THE
PERINATAL PERIOD. She believes wholeheartedly in the healing power of
relationships and feels emotional support is a critical component in
the sacred space of BIRTH AND POSTPARTUM.
