ABOUT THE PRESENTATION: The United States is becoming more diverse as
a nation and individuals across multiple ethnicities, cultures, races,
and social groups are affected by a myriad of behavioral health
disorders. It is therefore essential that behavioral healthcare
providers acquire knowledge regarding cultural issues that may affect
treatment, develop competence for management of culturally related
issues, and implement ethical evidence-based practices. To that end,
clinicians need to be knowledgeable about cultural attitudes, beliefs,
and behaviors which may affect various aspects of treatment such as
therapeutic alliance, engagement in treatment, and family support. In
this workshop, elements of culture will be delineated, and a model of
cultural competence will be presented along with elements of cultural
differences which may pose challenges to treatment. Emphasis will be
placed on successfully navigating culturally related challenges with
case discussion and invited audience participation.
