KICKOFF BOOK SELECTION—Adele Logan Alexander, Princess of the Hither Isles: A Black Suffragist’s Story from the Jim Crow South. In honor of the 2020 Centennial of the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment to the US Constitution granting women the vote, the Houston Public Library, the League of Women Voters and the UH Friends of Women’s Studies are launching a citywide Suffrage Centennial Book Club—#SCBC2020. Picture this: Houstonians of all ages across our metropolis, gathering in living rooms, coffee shops, libraries, and community centers, reading and discussing one book for each month in 2020. These conversation will be generative, sharing ideas in real time about why voting matters. The Suffrage Centennial Book Club offers all Houstonians the opportunity to reflect on where we’ve been and where we are now, as gendered people, as voting members of the community, as Houstonians, and as a nation. The sponsoring groups will host periodic events over the course of 2020 to bring together Houstonians to talk about what they’ve read and share their own voting experiences. GRAB YOUR COPY AND COME READY TO LEARN, DISCUSS AND SHARE!
