KICKOFF BOOK SELECTION—Adele Logan Alexander, Princess of the Hither
Isles: A Black Suffragist’s Story from the Jim Crow South. In honor
of the 2020 Centennial of the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment
to the US Constitution granting women the vote, the Houston Public
Library, the League of Women Voters and the UH Friends of Women’s
Studies are launching a citywide Suffrage Centennial Book
Club—#SCBC2020.
Picture this: Houstonians of all ages across our metropolis, gathering
in living rooms, coffee shops, libraries, and community centers,
reading and discussing one book for each month in 2020. These
conversation will be generative, sharing ideas in real time about why
voting matters. The Suffrage Centennial Book Club offers all
Houstonians the opportunity to reflect on where we’ve been and where
we are now, as gendered people, as voting members of the community, as
Houstonians, and as a nation.
The sponsoring groups will host periodic events over the course of
2020 to bring together Houstonians to talk about what they’ve read
and share their own voting experiences.
