Have you seen that giant statue of Sam HOUSTON on I 45 in
HUNTSVILLE? Well, RECK invites you to join us on a road trip and
with the aid of our professional tour guide, Richard Cook, we will see
the statue close-up and find out about the man that the statue
represents and explore some neat things in HUNTSVILLE.When we arrive
in HUNTSVILLE, we will take a guided tour of the WOODLAND HOUSE which
was the home of Sam Houston, his wife Margaret, and a bunch of kids.
General Houston and his family lived at Woodland for many years while
the General was Senator from the State of Texas in Washington. He
referred to this time in his life as some of the fondest of times. The
Woodland home is located on the campus of Sam Houston State University
and is a beautiful example of the classic "Dog Run" architecture so
popular in early Texas.
The tour includes a stop at the SAM HOUSTON MEMORIAL MUSEUM also
located on the campus along with a tour of the grounds of the Museum.
Next we will take a guided tour of the STEAMBOAT HOUSE where General
Sam Houston died. He caught a cold on a walk home one day and became
ill. As Margaret and others attended the old General it was reported
that he awoke from his fever, looked at Margaret and said "Texas,
Margaret, Texas" and then passed away.
We will then head over for lunch to the FARMHOUSE CAFÉ which is
described as a nice, but casual “hole in the wall” place that
serves quality down home Southern cooking with great atmosphere and
service. https://farmhousecafetexas.com/index.php/menu/

After lunch, we will drive thru Oakwood Cemetery and see SAM
HOUSTON’S GRAVE and then on to the TEXAS STATE PRISON MUSEUM. Here
we will see numerous exhibits including a prison contraband exhibit,
an inmate art exhibit, a prison hardware exhibit and a capital
punishment exhibit which includes one of the most chilling exhibits
“Old Sparky”, the decommissioned electric chair in which 361
prisoners were executed.
The Precinct 4 bus will leave from the Kingwood United Methodist
Church Family Outreach Center, Woodland Hills Drive and Crystal Spring
at 8:45 am on Friday, September 13. The bus should be back in
