Racial Equity Workshop Phase 1(June)

From Thu 11 June 2020 to Fri 12 June 2020
9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Ended

DESCRIPTION:REI’s two-day Phase 1 training is designed to develop the capacity of participants to better understand racism in its institutional and structural forms. Moving away from a focus on personal bigotry and bias, this workshop presents a historical, cultural, and structural analysis of racism. Topics covered include our fish/lake/groundwater analysis of structural racism; understanding and controlling implicit bias; race, poverty, and place; markedness theory; institutional power arrangements and power brokers; importance of definitions of race and racism; history and legacy of race in American economic and policy development; racial identity and its interaction with institutional culture. With shared language and a clearer understanding of how institutions and systems are producing unjust and inequitable outcomes, participants should leave the training better equipped to begin to work for change. WHY IS CEP HOSTING RACIAL EQUITY WORKSHOPS IN SAN ANTONIO? We believe that in order to create systemic change that dismantles the systemic disparities in our complicated education system we need to ensure that stakeholders, at all levels, have a strong root-cause analysis of what got US here and how yesterday’s history has shaped today’s reality. Because of this, we have chosen to focus some of our efforts in building a common narrative on the history of racism in SAN ANTONIO, the impact we see in our systems today, including but not limited to education, and what it will take to make long-lasting change. WHO ARE WE PARTNERING WITH: City Education Partners is partnering with the Racial Equity Institute (racialequityinstitute.com) to bring several key workshops to San Antonio community members. HOW DO WE RECRUIT ATTENDEES? Our focus has been with stakeholders directly involved with k-12 education in San Antonio. This includes school and district leaders, parents and community partners, elected officials and funders. Then we ask attendees to recommend others they believe should be invited into these workshops and we recruit form that network. These workshops are also open to the larger public. WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES: Each workshop has similar, yet slightly different objectives. Please see the last page of this document for workshop objectives for all 4 workshops we will be hosting at City Education Partners. RECOMMENDATIONS OF WORKSHOP ORDER: We recommend that most attendees start with Phase I, then attend a Latinx Challenges Towards Racial Justice and finally a Phase II. Phase II is most effective when groups from the same organization can come together. We will be inviting groups to attend Phase II based on the analysis of alumni by organization data. To participate in Phase II participants must have participated in Phase I and Latino Challenges Towards Racial Equity. The Youth workshop is targeted to high school students. POST-WORKSHOP ENGAGEMENT We host a debrief after each workshop in order to bring participants back for check-in and to collectively brainstorm the next steps. We are in the process of planning monthly alumni engagement events that will keep this group engaged in continued learning and development regarding racial equity in San Antonio. We are also in the process of forming a voluntary alumni coalition to harness the power of this collective group in advocating for larger-scale change efforts and campaigns related to equity, especially education equity.
