[https://www.brushstrokesfredericksburg.com/] DESCRIPTION Throughout
March, Brush Strokes Gallery will feature “Passages,” an exhibit
of paintings by guest artist Scott DeHaven. Scott says that he has
been sketching and drawing since his childhood and recalls that, as a
boy, he was fascinated with flight and the emerging Space program with
its pioneering astronauts. In 2012, the threshold a new arena of
artistic expression opened for him when his wife Christy—a potter at
LibertyTown Arts Workshop–suggested that he take an oil-painting
class with Bill Harris. With that, his creations took on new, powerful
life with vibrant colors and styles that ranged from realism to
impressionism. Within the last eight years, Scott has produced more
than 100 paintings, in some of which he invested as much as 50 hours,
on canvases that range from 9 x 12 inches to 36 x 36 and 30 x 40
inches. In his “Passages” exhibit, which he describes as a tribute
“to people and the passing of time,” DeHaven celebrates athletes
and entertainers and trailblazers that embodied the spirit of an era
of “The Greats.” Among the Greats in Scott’s life was the model
of his father, an accomplished engineer and pilot, who augmented his
fascination with flight and space exploration. The March exhibit will
feature paintings from a select body of work, that includes portrayals
of Duke Ellington, Ray Charles, baseball greats Brooks Robinson and
Frank Robinson, as well as some classic vehicles including his own
Porsche and a World War II fighter plane, the Mustang. DeHaven says
that, in addition to the emotion and personality of his subjects that
he strives to capture in his paintings, he often adds an element of
humor, especially in the titles he gives to his works. “Passages”
will feature paintings from a collection with names such as “Mustang
Sally” and “Come Fly with Me,” as well as a painting of the
black and white baseball stars titled “The Robinson Brothers.” In
addition, an action-packed painting of a manager and umpire in a
heated argument is dubbed “Gentlemen’s Disagreement.” DeHaven
typically directs the proceeds from his exhibits to a non-profit
organization, and profits from “Passages” will be donated to Safe
Paws, a Spotsylvania/Fredericksburg partnership for animal welfare and
safety. –Collette Caprara Scott DeHaven’s “Passages” exhibit
