Portland (STP) is an iconic bike ride that was named in top 10
recreational cycling events in America by Bicycling Magazine. The 206
mi (332 km) epic event takes place on the second or third weekend in
July featuring about 8,000 riders who are expected to get from Seattle
to Portland in one or two days! The ride is famous for its spectacular
landscapes along the course that lies through country roads, avoiding
busy Interstate 5. Participants pass Lake Washington , Mount Rainier,
Mount Saint Helens as well as countless lush valleys, green forests of
Washington and Oregon states. © Cascade Bicycle Club Seattle to
Portland was started in 1979 by the Cascade Bicycle Club. First, it
was designed as a race, but in 1981 the format was changed into a
recreational ride. The winner of the inaugural race was Jerry Baker
from Seattle. Gene Bisbee About 2000 riders are able to complete STP
in one day, though for the majority of riders that come from all over
the United States and Canada, it takes two days to finish. About 30 mi
(48 km ) of the route is uphill. The midpoint of the ride is located
in Centralia, WA, where there are showers, first aid, bicycle repair,
food and drink vendors, live music, and a beer garden. Other foods and
drink stops include Seward Park, Tenino, Vader, Goble, and Scappoose.
