Disparity and Injustice in the Legal System

TASWI SPEAKER SERIES HOSTS COLLEEN FOLEY EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, LEGAL AID SOCIETY OF MILWAUKEE INC. DISPARITY AND INJUSTICE IN THE LEGAL SYSTEM ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Colleen Foley is the product of immigrant grandparents and a union household (IBEW). That history instilled in her the power of advocacy and the honor of public service. Colleen recently became the Executive Director of the LEGAL AID SOCIETY OF MILWAUKEE, overseeing a staff of 30 lawyers and 18 support personnel. The LEGAL AID SOCIETY PROVIDES FREE LEGAL REPRESENTATION TO income-eligible Milwaukeeans in a broad range of civil LEGAL MATTERS, including housing, consumer and civil rights law, social security disability appeals, tax disputes, bankruptcy, and Guardian ad Litem representation for vulnerable children. She previously worked at the Milwaukee County Office of Corporation Counsel for 12 years, where as part of the management team, she provided daily counsel and advice to departments and elected officials. Colleen’s tenure with that office included successful arguments before the Wisconsin Supreme Court and the UNITED STATES 7th Circuit Court of Appeals on constitutional issues related to mental health and eviction law. Colleen created the LEGAL TRAINING COMPONENT OF CRISIS INTERVENTION TRAINING FOR LOCAL law enforcement, and in October 2018, received the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office Commitment to Excellence Award. She also initiated the Milwaukee County Employee Volunteer Program with the Hunger Task Force during her time with Milwaukee County. Colleen is the proud mother of Leah, Mara, and Natalie, and ever grateful for the steadfast support of her husband, Kent Redding. HOMEMADE REFRESHMENTS WILL BE SERVED BETWEEN 6:00 PM - 6:30 PM.
