Join WCREW for a morning presentation and INTERVIEW WITH GARY GRUNAU,
President of the Grucon Group and developer of Schlitz Park. Mr.
GRUNAU WILL BE JOINED BY ALYSSA REMINGTON OF THE CITY OF MILWAUKEE
DEPARTMENT OF DEVELOPMENT TO DISCUSS THE MILWAUKEE RIVERWALK PROJECT,
which was recently awarded the Urban Land Institute’s Global Awards
for Excellence. Corrinne Hess, with BizTimes, will serve as the
interview facilitator.
With more than 50 years of construction and development experience,
Gary has the ability to analyze the feasibility of a project, create a
strategy to win public and private community acceptance and implement
a plan to take a project from conception to completion. Having the
unique perspective from being both an owner, developer and
construction manager at various points in his career, he understands
all of the potential issues and takes proactive steps to minimize
problems and keep a project on track, on budget and on time. On a
civic basis, he was the primary creator of the legislation forming the
Wisconsin Center District, was the original Developer and General
Partner of the Hyatt Regency, was the leader of the team that created
the RiverWalk system and played a role in the establishment of the
Lakeshore State Park as a member of the Harbor Commission. Acting as
Chairman of the Spirit of Milwaukee, Gary is leading an effort to
develop creative solutions to some of Milwaukee’s pressing needs.
Gary has demonstrated a life-long commitment to southeastern
Wisconsin and has been instrumental in some of its most successful and
innovative urban projects. These include the Grand Avenue Middle
School, the Milwaukee Education Center (created a modern education
facility from an abandoned Schlitz Brewery building) the Hyatt
Regency, Schlitz Park, the Wisconsin Center, Discovery World at Pier
Wisconsin, the Milwaukee Riverwalk System, the Time Warner Building,
the Boston Store Revitalization, the Milwaukee Academy of Science, as
well as Manpower’s World Headquarters. His projects have won
numerous awards including the Urban Land Institute Achievement Award
and The National Council for Urban Economic Development Award for
Schlitz Park, and on behalf of the Milwaukee Riverwalk District, the
recipient of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) Award for the Milwaukee
