The Iditarod in March 2020, will be like no other Alaska trip! Unlike
the typical summer Alaska trips that focus more in the Kenai Peninsula
area, the UWM at Waukesha group will see over 750 miles of beautiful
scenery from Anchorage, Talkeetna, and Fairbanks; including the
Chugach Mountains, Matanuska-Susitna Valley, and of course, Denali
National Park with an opportunity to snowshoe. The trip covers two of
the best features of Alaska: the famous Iditarod race and bucket list
item of watching the Aurora Borealis, those famous dancing Northern
Lights.UWM at Waukesha Continuing Education will be there for the
official ceremonial start of the Iditarod in downtown Anchorage, and
able to cheer on the mushers at the restart in Willow the following
morning. The group will meet the mushers at the Musher’s Banquet,
get autographs, and meet folks from all over the world. They will
enjoy a private tour of a kennel and learn first-hand from a four-time
champion musher and his dogs.
The group is also scheduled for a show at the University of Alaska
Anchorage Planetarium. From Anchorage, we will head to Denali,
Talkeetna, and then on to Fairbanks. The group will be in Fairbanks
for prime viewing of the Aurora Borealis. After touring the Museum of
the North, the Trans-Atlantic Pipeline, and Chena Hot Springs Resort,
the UWM at Waukesha group will head back to Anchorage on a relaxing
ride via the scenic Alaska Rail.
