Amani Johnson, 22, is running for a seat on the Southfield City Council because residents who live, work, play, and learn in Southfield need a champion. Amani has lived in Southfield on the corner of Twelve Mile and Southfield Road his entire life. Amani attended both private and public education institutions in Southfield and graduated from Southfield Lathrup High School in 2014. Amani then attended Central Michigan University, where he worked as a Resident Assistant for freshman students, served as the Vice President of Model United Nations, and also served on the Student Government Association Executive Board. While attending CMU, Amani served as an intern on Ken Siver's 2017 bid for Southfield Mayor, an intern in the office of State Representative Jeremy Moss, and an intern in the office of Southfield City Administrator Fred Zorn. In May of 2015, Amani started his own small business, Vega Virtual Solutions, providing digital marketing and website design solutions to clients large and small. In June of 2016, Amani was appointed to the Southfield Parks and Recreation Board for a two-year term. He helped oversee the renovation of Beechwoods, the creation of a departmental master plan, the renovation of the restrooms at Inglenook Park, and the development of a handicap accessible playscape. In January of 2017, Amani joined the team at nonprofit Pack Your Back as their Assistant Director and Vice President of the Board for six months. During his time with PYB, he helped to raise thousands of dollars and helped to coordinate a free school supply drive at the Detroit Public Library main branch. Amani graduated from CMU with a Bachelor of Science in Public and Nonprofit Adminsitration, in May of 2018, and currently works as a campaign manager for Yolanda Smith Charles for Oakland County Commission. Despite his age, Amani has had more experience and is more qualified than most candidates for this position. Being a second generation Southfield resident, he understands the needs of his peers and wants to fight for them at City Hall. As a member of the Southfield City Council, Amani will fight to make housing more accessible for residents of all ages; to give small businesses opportunities to expand into the city's central business districts; to increase Parks & Recreation facilities and programs; and to foster technological innovation for the benefit of our residents. Amani will take a stand against complacent politicians and give our residents the Southfield they deserve. Vote Amani Johnson #AmaniForSouthfield2019
