The word "Doctor" means to teach.   Doctor in Latin is derived from the word docco, which means “to teach.” Today that translation is far from the truth. Back in the year 2000 the United States paid the most amount of money per capita on healthcare and yet ranked 37th amongst all nations in terms of overall health. When compared to other developed nations, the United States is consistently last in health and yet we pay more than twice the amount per capita compared to the healthiest nation. What does this mean? It means that we are shoveling money into a broken, inefficient system. We are more concerned with medicating the symptoms than we are about teaching how to live healthy lifestyles. Because of this, disease rates are on the rise. Children are starting to develop diseases that were once only seen in adults. How do we change this? It starts with becoming more educated on our health.     It is our mission at Integrative Brain and Body to empower people with the knowledge they need to overcome their chronic health concerns and live a healthy, fulfilling life. If this is your first time visiting our website we encourage you to spend some time reading our blog and sharing the posts. The purpose of the posts are to inform you on health concerns you or someone you know many have. If you are interested in working with us and becoming a patient under our care, please visit the “Become a Patient” section on our home page. The approach we take is not to medicate symptoms, but to find and address the underlying causes of your condition.     Why BOTH the brain and the body? At Integrative Brain and Body we take a unique approach with our patients by focusing on the complex interactions our nervous system has with our body and vice versa. With over 100 billion neurons and an estimated 20 quadrillion calculations per second, the brain is one of the most complex and fascinating organs we have. Because of how active it is, our brain is one of the first organs in our body to feel the effects of metabolic dysfunction. This is why a common complaint we hear with metabolic issues (like thyroid issues, diabetes, IBS, etc.) is brain fog/fatigue and mood issues.  What is going on inside of our body can affect the health of our brain. On the other side of that coin, the brain is responsible for maintaining healthy control of our muscles and organs. The brain is also the organ which we perceive and respond to everything in our environment. When brain function decreases, we lose out not only in the health of our body but also the quality of our life. We find that when we approach our patients with respect for what is happening with both their brains and their bodies, the quality of care and outcomes improve drastically. This is why our patients will fill out a detailed history, receive comprehensive laboratory testing as well as a multi-system physical examination and neurological evaluation.
