The Matchbox Theater is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization which recently re-located in The Upstairs Ballroom at 5415 1/2 Nicollet Avenue, in SW Minneapolis in the Tangletown neighborhood. The actual former ballroom space provides a wonderful intimate venue for live theater, dance, music, comedy, special events and other types of live entertainment. Douglas Stewart is the Producing Artistic Director/Lead Instructor for The Matchbox Theater, which was originally founded by Stewart in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1994.  The school offers professional acting classes for all ages in stage, film, television, and commercials. Special acting workshops are offered in the summer and throughout the year. The Matchbox Theater opened in April of 2015 in its former "underground" location with Will Enos dark comedy, THOM PAIN (based on nothing) and was directed by Stewart. William Hoeschler's performance in the title role wowed audiences with a SOLD OUT run. The new space has been used for two productions from Washburn High School and for summer TV/FIlm acting workshops. The theater will have its grand opening in September with its first professional theater offering with the Minnesota premier of the one-man show, Einstein: A Stage Portrait, starring Tom Schuch. In October, the theater will present an Irish play about the supernatural and haunting stories of folklore. In December, the theater will present a holiday treat about a dysfunctional family on Christmas Eve called The Booby Trap, written by local playwright Marcus Anthony.   For more information about The Matchbox Theater, contact Douglas Stewart at 612-223-8664 or dstewart@TheMatchboxTheater.com.
