This month at Sam's CORNER, there will be a return to the classic
piano trio format. In addition to the wide-ranging, genre-hopping
piano wizardry of Sam Rudin, you will be treated to virtuosic
versatility of Jeremy Steinkoler on the drums, and the similarly
endowed Sam Bevan on bass.In case you don't know, Sam's repertoire
stylistically spans the entire 20th century of American music. And
although it includes some unexpected delights, it revolves mainly
around the well-known intersection of blues and jazz. And once in a
while, he reveals that he can also be a compelling vocalist whose
rough-hewn voice conveys both drama and humor.
And, as if all that is not enough, Sam will also be visited by Back
Room favorite Yolandra Rhodes, a wonderful and very popular singer of
jazz and soul music (and a true, old-school entertainer) who is quite
familiar to Back Room audiences, having appeared here a dozen times
with her own excellent band.
And make no mistake, Yolandra is a terrific singer. She has a rich and
powerful voice, and she knows how to use it. And her arrangements of
jazz and R&B standards shed new light on old songs.
