PEÑA is the dynamic musical project led by Nico Peña, a Chilean-American artist celebrated for his eclectic blend of influences and prolific output. Originally from New Jersey and now based in San Francisco, Nico's music is a fusion of his East Coast roots and the vibrant cultural melting pot of his West Coast home. Singing in both Spanish and English, his unique sound is a rich tapestry of genres. Seamlessly weaving together Latin jazz rhythms, soulful vocals, introspective emo themes, sun-soaked surf rock vibes, the smooth allure of bossa nova, dreamy textures of shoegaze, and the intimate, raw aesthetic of lo-fi pop.
On their latest release, Dividing Lines, San Francisco indie rock quartet, Mint, steer into noisier territory. Reflections of post punk and dream pop imbue their guitar-driven sound with new depth and urgency. Dividing Lines was recorded at Different Fur Studios in the fall and winter of 2023 with engineer/co-producer Sean Fonda and marks the first release to feature a new rhythm section and the start of a new era for the band.
San Francisco/Oakland-based UFO Baby is chasing a sound both familiar and new, each song inching towards an evolving vision. Influences range from Stereolab to Syd Barrett, from Les Rallizes Dénudés to Ennio Morricone. Songs inspired by identity, nonsense, Sun Ra, mental health, and anything in between. UFO Baby invites you to wind down, hop on, and ascend.
“gloomy june” may sound like a contradiction to anyone imagining a sun-soaked California summer; but in San Francisco, a thick, cold fog covers the city for a month known as “June Gloom.” From this contradiction, gloomy june draws their name, and inspiration for their sound. Where there are bittersweet guitar lines and anthemic synths, paired with danceable and oftentimes moshable drums, you will find lyrics about grief and anxiety. Where there are heavy drum breakdowns and descending chords, there are lyrics about hope and love overcoming the weight of the world.
