The Hegeman provides permanent, affordable housing for single adults
in the Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn. The six story structure
offers studio apartments for formerly homeless indviduals with special
needs, persons with HIV/AIDS and low-income residents, many from the
local community. The design by CookFox Architects is insprired by
biophilic principles and obtained a LEED Silver cerrification by
focusing on indoor air quality and energy efficiency. The brick
exterior is carefully detailed to provide an unusually elegant facade
for affordable housing.
