Chashama supports artists by giving them space to create and present their work. Space to Present Chashama currently manages twelve presentation spaces around New York City. Through this program we give performers, visual artists and curators the opportunity to present their work to the public in professional, highly visible venues in a wide range of locations. These spaces are made available at no cost, to artists working in a variety of mediums, from dance, music, theater and performance art, to painting, installation, sculpture and multi-disciplinary fields. Performances, exhibitions, installations, and workshops range in duration from a few days to two months. We provide logistical and promotional support, as well as small stipends to selected performers, curators and artists to cover production costs. Our presentation venues vary from storefront windows and raw industrial spaces, to white box galleries and private/public venues. Additionally, through our partnerships with privately owned public spaces, we are able to exhibit visual art in building lobbies and host performances in some very unique places. Chashama's locations are as diverse as the neighborhoods surrounding them, encouraging artists to "think outside the box" and engage new audiences in exhilarating ways. Space to Create Chashama’s Space to Create program, the largest artist studio residency in New York City, provides subsidized studio space to 126 New York City based artists. The Workspace program evolved from Chashama’s original, central mission of giving space to create to New York City-based artists. Studios range in size from under 200 square feet to over 400 square feet, and are rented to participating artists at up to 90% below market rates. In 2007 Chashama expanded into long-term studio hubs in Harlem and the Brooklyn Army Terminal in Sunset Park, which together with smaller complexes in Far Rockaway, Queens, Midtown Manhattan, and Matawan, NJ comprise the 126 individual studio spaces. Curatorial Services We can develop, curate and implement a variety of innovative, creative installations for corporations, individuals and organizations. All elements of a space are carefully curated for its maximum potential to connect art installations to viewers. By allowing us to curate your space, we bring fresh ideas and aesthetics, and a steady platform for Chashama artists to develop and present their works. Youth In addition to connecting artists in NYC with affordable work and presentation space, we aspire to bring the benefits of art and cultural programming to New Yorkers of all ages and backgrounds. We believe that art can change the path of anyone's life, and support active youth-outreach activities by providing programs with safe, free space to teach, mentor and transform young lives. chashama North Residency Newly reinvented, chaNorth continues to evolve as an opportunity for emerging artists (from the city, region, and nationwide) to remove themselves from the typical demands of daily life for the chance to immerse themselves in creative work for four weeks.
