JEANNETTE RANKIN! In 1916 JEANNETTE RANKIN BECAME THE FIRST WOMAN IN
UNITED STATES HISTORY ELECTED TO THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. She had
been involved in the women's suffrage movement prior to that and
continued with it until the passage of the 19th Amendment. RANKIN WAS
ALSO A PACIFIST WHO VOTED AGAINST THE WAR. Re-elected in 1940, she
also voted against World War II. She is the only person in UNITED
STATES history to vote against both world wars. In her late 80's she
