In 2018 nearly 26,575 people were released from North Carolina
prisons. Best estimates tell us 50% likely suffer from a SUBSTANCE USE
DISORDER. An additional barrier is lack of health insurance for the
majority of this population. Additionally, recently released
individuals are 74 times more likely than the general population to
die of a heroin overdose in the first 2 weeks post-release. Education
about SUBSTANCE USE IS IMPORTANT. Treatment works and can reduces
crime and recidivism.Behaviors and history of substance misuse can
have important implications for justice involved individuals
successful transition back to the community. This session will
highlight two 2 main goals:
*

Recovery
