The Chamber Orchestra of PITTSBURGH concludes its 2025-26 SEASON WITH
A CELEBRATION OF NEW ARTISTS AND A RARELY PERFORMED WORK BY CLASSICAL
MUSIC’s most familiar name. On May 2, 2026, 7:30pm at Rodef Shalom
COP will perform the world premiere of Steel City Sounds, a
commissioned work by composer Trevor Weston. The first half of the
program will also feature the winners of COP’s 2025-26 Young Artist
Concerto Competition, Ziyu Cai of Carnegie Mellon University and Eliza
Rizk of Shady Side Academy. In the second half, COP will perform the
Symphony No. 2 by Beethoven. Trevor Weston has received the George
Ladd Prix de Paris from the University of California, Berkeley, a
Goddard Lieberson Fellowship and the Arts and Letters Award in Music
from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and won the first
Emerging Black Composers Project award sponsored by the San Francisco
Conservatory of Music. His upcoming composition for COP incorporates
the artistry of Pittsburgh legends into his Steel City Sounds, August
Wilson, Billy Strayhorn, and Franco Harris. Of the work Weston says,
“Steel City Sounds pays homage to three individuals of African
descent, sons of Pittsburgh by birth or adoption, who have made huge
contributions to American Culture.”
“Trevor Weston is such a talented composer,” says Artistic
Director and Conductor Edward Leonard. “His work is original,
exciting, and accessible – and will give our audience a wonderful
experience.”
Tickets are $35 for adults if purchased in advance and $40 at the
door, and $10 for students, and they are available online at
www.copgh.org.
